Writing about Development turned out to be much more difficult than actually doing development. Throughout this process, though, the areas that were hardest to write were the same ones that were hardest to do inside a telecommunications service provider environment.
I would like to thank those who helped and supported me along the way. First of all, to my friends and former colleagues at MCI and Cincinnati Bell, with whom I shared many a development effort, and who understand the pain, pleasure, and frustration of working complex projects through large organizations.
I’d also like to thank the many service providers and industry contacts who shared their thoughts and time during interviews and discussions prior to and throughout the writing of this book. Many thanks also go to Anne Cullather, who assisted with the reading and provided many valuable comments.
And also, to Jack Lyman, for his outstanding administrative support and assistance. Most of all, to those who offered me emotional support during the months it took to bring this manuscript to completion—in particular, Brenda, Giulia, Madeline, Maribeth, and Michelle—thank you all. Finally, to Dory Winkelman for his on-going encouragement and support.
