The second edition updates all the comprehensive information and illustrations regarding infrared semiconductor optoelectronics provided in the first edition. The same easy-to-read format developed in the first edition was again utilized, and this provides engineers a primary introductory reference guide for LED light sources and silicon photosensors. The updates include epitaxial growth techniques, IC process flows, packaging, new devices, applications and solid-state relays.

We have also added two entirely new chapters for both the visible and ultraviolet portion of electromagnetic radiation spectrum, which design engineers will find very valuable. Since the first edition was published in 1987, both the significance of optoelectronics in our everyday lives and the market size for such devices has grown considerably.

The market size for optoelectronic devices is now measured in billions of dollars and will continue to grow even larger in the coming years. A major market driver in the future will be the conversion of traditional light bulbs to visible LED lighting to gain longer operating life, higher efficiencies, and a significant reduction of mercury released into the environment. Governing bodies around the world are legislating new lighting efficiency standards that will drive the next round of growth.

The commercially emerging ultraviolet (UV) LED market is beginning to make inroads into applications monopolized by traditional low- and medium-pressure lamps. The authors wish to thank Reyne Parks for her patience and assistance in the helping to organize the manuscript material. A special note of thanks goes to Gary Clements for all the wonderful illustrations he created for the second edition of this book.

Dave Birtalan began his career at the General Electric’s Semiconductor Division in 1979 where he held various sales, marketing, product management/development, and engineering positions, most notably as a laser diode engineer associated with the SDI program, before joining a joint semiconductor venture between General Electric and Mitsubishi. In addition to lasers and LEDs, the author has been involved with RF transistor, MOSFET, and power semiconductor technologies.
